THERAPY FOR CHILDREN And families

Watching your child struggle is hard.  Children and families typically come to us for help with anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, experiencing divorce, and other areas of concern.  In therapy, your child– and you– will learn about new ways of communicating, coping, and connecting to help your child improve their overall well-being.  We may offer a formal diagnosis that will inform treatment in therapy, pediatrics, and in schools (if you choose).  At A&C, therapy with children is creative and flexible; We may play games, go on walks, or invite you to come in the therapy room to practice the new behaviors your child is learning.  Our goal is to help your child make changes that will impact the trajectory of their lives and the way your whole family feels right now. Please reach out with any questions about the process and, if your child is older than 12, visit our teen page!

Active & Connected Family Therapy specializes in therapy, psychiatry, and psychological assessments for all members of the family in offices across Virginia and beyond.

Supportive space for your child to learn new ways of communicating, coping, and connecting.

It is so hard to see your child struggle. Whether it is anxiety, depression, ADHD, or any other emotional difficulty, we are here to help.

Taking your child to therapy may feel intimidating, but it can actually be a relatively relaxed and heartwarming time. We see ourselves as a member of you and your child’s team and we hope to partner with you in helping them work through whatever is getting in their way as well as improve their overall emotional well-being. We usually tell kids we are similar to a teacher, or coach, and can help them improve areas of their emotional and family life where they may struggle.

Therapy will look different based on the age of your child and what they are working on. For most, therapists will start by meeting just with the parents, and then flow between working with the child, parent(s), and whole family. As child therapists, we get to be more creative in how we help people. Typical sessions may include playing games, planning bedtime routines, making feelings charts, creating behavioral expectations, taking a walk, or any other way we think we may reach your child. Please ask us any questions about our process!

Additionally, while telehealth can be more challenging with younger clients, our team has developed some tools and tricks to make it work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept insurance?

Many of our therapists are in-network with Aetna. Our team of Anthem and Optum providers is growing.  You can find insurance information for specific therapists using the Therapist Search Tool (Coming Soon 4/2024).

For therapists that are not in your network, we are happy to work with your insurance company to access your out-of-network benefits if available. Many clients have 50-100% of the costs of their sessions covered by their insurers after they have met their out of network deductibles. The easiest way to find out what your insurance will cover is to contact your insurance company to determine your coverage and benefits.

In the event that your insurance does not cover your care, A&C may be able to provide you with a discounted cash rate and other options to lower your costs.

Do You Accept Insurance? What Types of Payment Do You Take?

Clinician rates vary based upon experience, level of education, and specialties. If your clinician is in-network with your specific insurance, you will pay their contracted rates.

If your clinician is out-of-network, we are happy to work with your insurance company to access your out-of-network benefits if available. Many clients have 50-100% of the costs of their sessions covered by their insurers after they have met their out of network deductibles. The easiest way to find out what your insurance will cover is to contact your insurance company to determine your coverage and benefits.

Generally, rates fall within these ranges:

Licensed Clinician: $150 – $300

Resident or Supervisee: $100 – $175

Student or Intern: $20 –   $100

Psychiatric Intake: $300 – $500

30-minute med check: $150 – $175

What other services for children do you all provide?

In addition to child therapy, A&C offers family therapy, child psychiatry, and psychological assessments for children.  The best way for providers to understand and support your child is to integrate and streamline their mental health care.  As such, we offer a team-based approach by collaborating regularly about your child and ways to help them. Additionally, because we are a team, we are able to make better recommendations about our services/providers and can even fast-track in-house referrals

We also understand that family life is complicated and demanding.  We often see multiple members of the same family to further coordinate and streamline mental health care.  At times, different members of our team provide therapy to siblings, parents/guardians as individuals, and/or the couple or whole family.  In this way, we can collaborate on what will help the whole family versus just the individual.
