Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Your Rates?
1. Independently Licensed Therapists

Independently Licensed Therapists have completed a graduate or doctoral program and the required number of supervised clinical hours.  This is the level of training and experience most insurance companies require for reimbursement.  See “Insurance” section below to make sure you are eligible for reimbursement through your insurance company.

Average Rate Per Session is between $160 and $300 depending on experience and demand.

2. Residents and Post-Doctoral Students

Residents, Post-Docs, and License-Eligible Therapists have completed a clinical graduate or doctoral program in Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or Social Work.  They are accruing the required number of hours for independent licensure and provide services under the license of their A&C Clinical Supervisor.  They typically receive 1-3 hours of clinical supervision a week.  Some insurance companies and insurance plans will reimburse for therapy sessions provided by a “Resident” others will not.

Average Rate Per Session is between $135 and $160 (except special circumstances when it may be higher)

3. Interns

Interns are graduate students in the field of Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology.  Their internship with Active & Connected Family Therapy is part of their graduate school training and they work closely with an A&C Clinical Supervisor, our most senior level clinician.  We are selective in hiring interns, ensuring that they have both the experience and maturity to offer high-quality care. Most insurance companies will not reimburse for therapeutic services provided by an intern.

Average Rate Per Session is sliding scale to $100.

Do You Accept Insurance? What Types of Payment Do You Take?

Kathleen Van Allen, LPC is in network with most major insurance providers. She provides face-to-face therapy in Lynchburg and teletherapy across Virginia. We are actively working on increasing insurance options for more providers.  We also offer therapy with interns and through our Social Justice program at the rate of most insurance co-pays ($25-$40).

Other clinicians are not currently in-network with any insurance companies; however, depending on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, it is possible for services to be covered in full or in part. Please contact your provider to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy services.

We would recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your benefits:
  • Does my health insurance plan include mental health benefits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet?
  • Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit?
  • Do I need written approval from my primary care physician in order for services to be covered?
  • Does my insurance plan cover services by Residents in Counseling if they are supervised?

We accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards as forms of payment. We also accept most HSA and FSA plans.

Please note: We do not accept Medicaid.

Right to a Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
