Hi everyone!
This has been one of the harder transitions to school for my sweet kids. Luckily, I work with some pretty bright people who offer me perspective and remind me I’m not alone. Here are some of the nuggets that I have found helpful:
1. Starting a new school year is equivalent to starting a new job for kids…new social scene, new routines, new expectations. We all know that changing jobs is one of the most stressful events in an adult’s life… yet our kids make this shift every 12 months! So now I am a little more empathetic, even though it is still hard.
2. The phones at A&C have been busy this week. Mental health in families is seasonal, and we are starting our busy months at work and at home. Knowing this, I am going to proactively make space for FUN during the weekdays, even if my mind is all about getting stuff done. My whole family will benefit and yours will, too!
3. Football season has started, reminding all UVA fans and Charlottesville residents of the tragedy that occurred last November. It may be worth checking in with yourself and your kids around fear, worry, and sadness that we may be holding on to. For your kids, just understanding their feelings and talking about them out loud can make them feel better.
As always, let us know if you all need anything.
Sincerely and in solidarity,
Amanda
