My name is Joy Brittain. I started my internship here late last spring and will continue through the upcoming academic year. I am currently completing my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) through Kairos University. Because I am attending part-time, I have about two years left until graduation. My educational background also includes a bachelor's degree in biology and religion (I am very much a science nerd!), a master's in theology with an emphasis in family counseling, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies. Professionally, I have spent the past 35 years in education, dedicated to supporting students from limited-income, first-generation, disabled, migrant, and foster youth backgrounds.
While a significant portion of my training is family-oriented, I am also fully trained to work with individuals and couples. In my practice, I love integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS) with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), alongside Solution-Focused Therapy. When working with younger children, I use play therapy as the foundation for our interactions. Drawing from my decades as an educator, I also specialize in helping individuals process past trauma, guiding them out of negative cycles and toward a more positive mindset.
On a personal note, I was born and raised in New York but lived in California for 40 years—meaning I am always on the hunt for authentic NY-style pizza that just can't be found here in Virginia! I have two grown sons who live out west, and a wonderful, curious four-year-old grandson. My lifelong philosophy of paying it forward was deeply shaped by my time serving in the Peace Corps in Nepal. I currently reside in Bridgewater, but split my week to spend time in Charlottesville with my spouse. I am thoroughly enjoying my time here and am grateful for the excellent supervision of Ms. Fran Ellers.
