Bio

Dr. Emily Young, DO, MA, MPH specializes in psychiatric treatment for children, adolescents, and women. As a board-certified family physician with a specialty in psychiatry, Dr. Young has a deep understanding of the mental, emotional, and physical considerations when working with people. She welcomes medically complex patients of all ages, including those experiencing pregnancy and postpartum, mature ages over 65, or those being treated with long-acting injectable medications, ECT, or other modalities. Dr. Young prioritizes listening to and “hearing” her patients with curiosity and compassion, and she deeply commits to treating each person as an equal human deserving of respect, trust, and support. Dr. Young feels these patient-centered principles are paramount to achieving high-quality, trauma-informed, and effective mental health care for each individual patient.

Dr. Young earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine.  She completed her residency at the University of Virginia and served as an attending at both the UVA and Martha Jefferson hospitals. With these collective experiences, Dr. Young assumed a pivotal role to serve as a lead child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents (CCCA), the only state-run child and adolescent psychiatric hospital in Virginia. She teaches at national, state, and university levels on the topics of adolescent mental health, ADHD, anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and navigating care coordination within the Charlottesville and Virginia mental health systems. Dr. Young is also the longtime medical director of the Charlottesville Free Clinic.

Dr. Young lives in Charlottesville with her husband, two children, and two chihuahuas. She volunteers weekly with International Neighbors, finds peace in avidly practicing hot yoga several times a week, and uses weekend time for pottery, bonfires, the NBA, and her close-knit group of neighborhood friends.
